This old Victorian so-called Penny Lick glass was used for ice cream in the late 1800s. The customer paid a penny for a scoop of ice cream that was scooped into the glass. When the ice cream was finished, the glass was returned to the ice cream man and the glass was filled again without cleaning it for the next customer. After more is known was about infectious diseases and hygiene, this way of selling ice cream was no longer used. The thick glass made it seem like you were getting a big scoop of ice cream. When the ice cream was finished, the glass was returned and refilled without cleaning it.
